My name is Rebecca Scott-Pillai. First and foremost, I’m a mum. I’m currently pregnant with my second baby. When my daughter was born 4 years ago, it were a huge life-changing experience for me. I understand first hand that often parenting choices are not easy ones, and that sometimes we don’t live up to our own high expectations. I also understand that all parents want to do the best for their families, which is why I set up this service.
I’m a registered midwife with 14 years’ experience working in the maternity service in Northern Ireland. I’ve looked after mums with complex pregnancies and births, I’ve also looked after mums having beautiful, normal births at home, in midwifery led units and in labour ward. I’ve seen women in antenatal clinics and at home with their babies. I also completed my MSc in Midwifery in 2011, the research which I undertook was published here.
I qualified as an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) in December, 2016. Considered as the “gold standard” in breastfeeding support, this qualification allows me to explore more complex breastfeeding problems and offer tailor-made solutions which perhaps other health care professionals aren’t aware of. However, a big part of breastfeeding success is being prepared for the reality of what breastfeeding entails, so I’m also available for breastfeeding preparation workshops, and support and reassurance following the birth, even if breastfeeding is going well.
Additionally, I’ve been a sling consultant since October 2015. I volunteer at Babywearing NI, a sling library in Lisburn. Using slings is a wonderful way of bonding with your baby and keeping him/her happy while leaving your hands free to get some housework done or dinner made, or for introducing your baby to the big, wide world. Using a sling was a real life-saver for me in the early days and continued to be a useful piece of equipment for the first couple of years. I briefly cover the use of slings and safety considerations in my Preparing for Parenting class.
I’ve also attended Spinning Babies workshops, which has added to my understanding of active birth and ways of making room for the baby during the birth process.
I’m constantly researching and updating the information I offer. I think that the services I offer will genuinely help prepare you for birth and parenthood!
